Vital Care in Sri Lanka
Recent clashes between armed forces and the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, commonly known as the Tamil Tigers) in Sri Lanka have forced many thousands of civilians to abandon their homes. Over 275,000 of those displaced by the fighting have been housed in temporary camps, mainly in the Vavuniya District.
At the request of the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health, Sightsavers facilitated a two day eye screening programme, aimed at diagnosing and treating eye health problems in the camps in Vavuniya.
A six month programme of screenings among those displaced by the conflict was also developed in partnership with the Ministry of Health, which launched thanks to a donation of $5,000 from Standard Chartered Bank in Sri Lanka. The screenings are carried out by medical volunteers from Colombo and Kandy Eye Hospitals. The Ministry of Health has also identified around 450 health volunteers among the camp residents to work together with primary health care staff.
