An A for Effort
Education for blind children in Zambia has received a massive boost, thanks to the advocacy efforts of Sightsavers' partners.
Local partners, including the Zambia National Education Coalition, got the issues surrounding education for disabled children onto television and radio, gained support from teachers for the campaign, and lobbied government through a range of methods, including visually impaired learners themselves making presentations to the government through song, poetry and speeches.
As a result, a Centre of Excellence for special education is being built in Lusaka, where a resource centre will also be based, providing help to teachers in schools with disabled students.
Furthermore, at the Zambia Institute of Special Education, funding has been secured for the establishment of a computer laboratory with assistive technology devices. The college has since installed special needs learning materials, including Braille materials and computers with screen readers.
