Malawi
Landlocked Malawi ranks among the world's least developed countries. 90% of the population live in rural areas and the population density is one of the highest in Africa with 85 persons per square kilometre.
Sightsavers in Malawi
Sightsavers began work in Malawi in the early 1960s and today supports programmes which cover the whole country. As in many African countries, Malawi has a shortage of health care workers so Sightsavers supports the training of eye care professionals here. Together with our partners we have also introduced inclusive education for blind and visually impaired pupils. We have also worked with WaterAid to support local committees to build latrines in order to improve sanitation, and reduce the spread of diseases such as trachoma.
