Latest News from Liberia
The security situation has remained relatively stable in most parts of the country. Various security networks have collaborated to minimise armed robberies and there have been few conflicts over land reported.
The Government signed a US$3 billion Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) with BHP Billiton Company. According to the agreement, BHP will provide job opportunities and invest US$15 million towards social development to help support education, health care delivery, housing, and community projects in five counties (Nimba, Grand Bassa, Bong, Margibi and Montserrado).
In support of reconstruction efforts, the Chinese Government undertook major renovation works and construction of new buildings on the University of Liberia Fendell campus, and construction of a modernised referral hospital in Tappita, Nimba County.
The US$4.6 billion debt cancellation signed by the World Bank and the International Monetary fund, certifies that Liberia has reached the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) completion point. Liberia has also liquidated its debts in the region with three West African Financial institutions in Ghana, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
Highlights from our projects
- The five counties in the southeast provided quality eye care services at health facilities including 35 community outreaches. A total of 3,193 patients were screened, out of which 2,055 received treatment for eye conditions. 72 cataract surgeries were successfully performed and 186 people received glasses to improve their eye sight.
- Ophthalmic nurses in Sinoe, Grand Gedeh and Maryland have become members of the County Health Development committee. They regularly share information on eye health resulting in better collaboration with stakeholders.
- Mectizan® treatment is in progress. A meeting took place with community chiefs and representatives, drug distributors and supervisors, and local NGOs to ensure their full support in enhancing treatment. 412 health workers were trained in 11 counties to increase the knowledge of health workers on the concept of community distribution.
