- The Belize Council for the Visually Impaired (BCVI), our partner in Belize, recently held their annual general meeting at the Image Factory Art Gallery, which included a photographic exhibition and the launch of their brand new website.
- Base and outreach clinics assessed over 2,000 patients in the last three months, although the National Eye Clinic continues to function without a fulltime ophthalmologist. However, Dr Baxter McLendon worked with BCVI in May, conducting clinics and performing a total of 20 operations, and is returning for another month in August and September. Dr Paul Beer also visited and performed 13 laser treatments, and Dr David Boes conducted 26 cataract operations as a visiting ophthalmologist.
- BCVI have also been able to offer the new service of low vision assessment over the last quarter. In total six clinics have been conducted and ten children with low vision identified and provided with low vision devices.
- A workshop on early intervention was held for the first time. It highlighted how important this is in the development of a child with a disability, and was attended by parents, teachers and rural health nurses.
