Sri Lanka
A palm-fringed island just off the south-east coast of India, Sri Lanka has suffered from two decades of civil war caused by ethnic tensions. Out of a population of around 19.2 million, approximately 83,000 individuals are blind in Sri Lanka, with cataract remaining the most common cause of blindness.
Sightsavers in Sri Lanka
Sightsavers has been supporting partners in the country since the late 80s. During the last few years we have worked increasingly with the Ministry of Health to tackle low vision and childhood blindness following the Government of Sri Lanka's signing of VISION 2020 in 2001. We are currently supporting a national study on childhood blindness.
