Sightsavers is a proud member of the International Disability and Development Consortium (IDDC), a global association of 23 disability and development non-governmental organisations (NGOs), disabled people's organisations and mainstream development NGOs that support work on issues of disability and development in more than 100 countries.
Aims and objectives
The aim of IDDC is to promote inclusive development internationally, with a special focus on promoting the full and effective enjoyment of human rights by all disabled people living in economically poor communities in lower and middle-income countries. There are three main objectives:
- To promote the inclusion of the disability dimension, as well as appropriate disability-specific approaches, in all development policy and practice.
- To improve the practice of the member organisations by collaborating and sharing experience about policy and practice.
- To support the exchange of information and knowledge about inclusive development, especially between people and organisations in economically poorer countries, by the wide distribution of information.
Our work and the IDDC
Sightsavers was one of three IDDC members that attended a conference in June to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and to consider what kind of shape a post MDG agenda should take. Sightsavers presented a paper to help fuel the day's discussions and have since released a policy briefing that discusses the MDGs and people with disabilities.
Sightsavers and all members of the IDDC continue to campaign for the inclusion of disabled people in all efforts to achieve the MDGs. Together we have launched a website dedicated to spreading the word about the importance of including disabled people in the goals set by world leaders, and to demonstrate the many ways you can get involved to help make the difference.
