Accessibility at Sightsavers

We aim to champion accessibility in everything we do, from our programme work to our branding and how our organisation is run.

It’s thought that one in seven people around the world has some form of disability, while many others contend with specific learning difficulties.

This could affect their vision, hearing, movement, memory or thinking. Yet they still have a right to participate fully in society and thats where accessibility comes in.

What is accessibility?

Accessibility means creating information, activities and places that can be used by as many people as possible.

WW

It often refers to permanent disabilities, but it applies to everyone: we all have different needs at different times.

Accessibility could benefit someone if they have a broken arm, they’re in a noisy place, or they’ve lost their glasses.

Our approach to accessibility

Making things accessible ensures everyone is able to participate, regardless of their situation. At Sightsavers, accessibility is embedded into everything we do: from our organisational policies, recruitment and human resourcing to our programme work in Africa and Asia.

Accessibility also influences our written communications, our website design and even our brand colour palette.

We aim to champion accessibility and raise awareness outside our organisation by sharing our knowledge and encouraging everyone to think accessibly.

Accessibility and inclusive design

Accessibility is part of a wider concept known as inclusive design, which aims to create products and experiences that can be used by the widest range of people. It covers many diverse user needs, not just disability. Read more on Gov.uk
