Sightsavers Ireland ambassador Pádraic Mannion co-hosted a quiz in County Galway that raised €7,060 for Sightsavers’ eye health work.

Local couple Deirdre Hogan and her quizmaster husband Michael invited Pádraic to help run their annual fundraiser at Keary’s Bar in Caltra, where quizzers had the chance to meet the Hurling All-Star.

Pádraic has been a Sightsavers ambassador since 2019, when he travelled to Sierra Leone to experience our sight-saving work in action. There, he witnessed the impact that eye screenings and operations can have on people with limited access to health care.

Pádraic said: “I continue to be blown away by the support and generosity of the local community. It’s one of my favourite aspects of being involved with Sightsavers, especially knowing the impact that this will have on families that have far less than us and who are at risk of losing their sight needlessly.”

Thanks to a huge turnout, the money raised will enable Sightsavers to provide 220 sight-saving cataract operations for adults living in countries like Sierra Leone, or 70 operations for children at risk of losing their sight permanently from cataracts.
