Trachoma doesn’t just steal sight. It also affects education and income.

Six-year-old Happy, pictured above, spent most of her life suffering with the agony of trachoma. The pain was so intense that she sometimes spent up to 24 hours with her eyes shut to cope with the pain. It meant she was unable to go to school and get an education.

Fosca, Happy’s mother, was left with no choice but to quit her job and lose her income to care for Happy.

Trachoma doesn’t just affect those it infects: it can have an impact on entire families as they sacrifice income and risk becoming infected themselves to provide adequate care.

If Happy had been given antibiotic treatment, her trachoma infection wouldn’t have progressed to the most advanced stages, known as trichiasis. Without surgery, this can lead to permanent blindness.
