Help a family live without worry

Your gift could transform the future for a child with cataracts.

It started at bath time, when Jane noticed a white spot on her three-year-old son’s eye.

Jane didn’t know that Omega was born with cataracts in both eyes, but she soon realised he was struggling to see. That’s when her fears began.

In Malawi, up to a third of blindness is caused by cataracts, but there are very few eye health specialists available to diagnose and treat people. Jane and Omega made the long journey to the nearest hospital many times, but were put on a waiting list and sent home. Every day, Jane waited for news.

Thanks to supporters like you, and our dedicated local partners, Omega was able to be screened in his community by a Sightsavers-trained health worker. He was referred for a cataract operation at a surgical camp organised by local Sightsavers staff.

The images below show Omega’s transformation from being so reliant on his family, to running around and playing. This is the difference your gift could make.

Many families in Malawi are still facing the same challenges that Jane and Omega once did – making long journeys and waiting for help. You could help bring eye care closer to them, taking screenings to more communities and transforming futures. Your support could make a world of difference.

You have given me the strength to encourage other people who are facing the same problem we had. I will give them a message of hope, just as Sightsavers has given me hope.
